Writing, writing, writing

September 14th, 2009

But not what I’m supposed to be for this class. I just had a deadline for a 6,000 word essay. So, I’m sorry if I’ve been neglectful! The essay is now done, and I have until tomorrow night. I swear, while I’m procrastinating about writing my own, I will read through your blogs! Ridiculous! (Me, I’m ridiculous, not any of you).

This is exactly what I needed to hear about writing/my writing.  When I took a creative writing course as an undergrad (come on, who didn’t when given the opportunity?  Plus, it was summer school.  Talk about ultimate indulgence! Did I mention I have a horrible habit of going off on tangents?) my “best stuff” was the more impersonal writings, done in the third person.  Being forced, now, to write about myself in the third person will be so invaluable.  And now I also understand why.  I needed to hear, as well, that the first draft is always crap.  I have a REALLY hard time editing and re-writing my own work.  I almost have to wait two years and go back to it as a completely different person in order to be able to change anything.  Don’t have that “luxury” here (I also use ironic quotes a lot.  I won’t do that in my actual writing).  The image of the sculpture, that the first draft is just the first cracks in the rock is one I am going to carry with me (and use when I teach; I’ll cite the source, don’t worry).  Jane, how brave of you for revealing (or allowing it to be revealed) that when you went over a story of yours, each sentence needed to be, how was it put, shaken up?  I love that.  I have to remember that, too.  No word or sentence is so sacred that it can’t be improved or shaken up.  I can’t wait to get started.  Now, to choose a place…

Hello world?

Wait, was this where I was supposed to post my bio?  God, you’d think I’d know how to do this, but I guess this truly reveals how lacking I am in terms of my techno-savy.  Go and check out my pages.  You’ll find out all about me.
