Good evening fellow students,

To introduce myself; my name is Alasdair and I’m a final year law student at St Catharine’s College, Cambrige University. My interests lie in the intersection of law and emerging technology, especially in the effects and interactions of technology and human rights. Its great to meet such a diverse and accomplished set of class mates from across the world and I hope to look at with you at how we begin to create and regulate legal frameworks for complex and developing technologies.

When I am not being a student In my spare time I enjoy skiing, squash and playing internet spaceships You should follow me on twitter here and read my blog here.

me2Hello everyone.  My name is Hope May.  I am a professor of philosophy (specializing in ancient philosophy) and recently completed my J.D. degree.   I recently authored a book “Aristotle’s Ethics: Moral Development & Human Nature” in which I argue for an interpretation of Aristotle’s ethics that is compatible with a view of autonomy that one finds in a theory of motivation called “Self-Determination Theory”.   Put most simply, I am interested in the neurobiology of flourishing and optimal experience.  Deeply influenced by the ideas of Mihalyi Csikszentmihayi, I would like to understand what, neurobiologically, is beneath feelings of “flow”, “intrinsic motivation” and the feeling of knowing.  Aristotle claimed that the purpose of law is to promote human flourishing and I whole heartedly agree.  I think that human rights law should absolutely take into account the ideas of flourishing put forth by Aristotle and his modern voice, Csikszentmihalyi.  Anyway, I am interested in this class for the aforementioned reasons and also because I am interested in the potential of the internet to promote human flourishing — because you see, for both Aristotle and Csikszentmihayi, knowledge, mastery, and a fellowship of inquiry are essential components of flourishing.   P.S. I do an internet radio show everyweek with my students.  You can listen on the archives at itunes or live via blogtalk radio at 7pm EST.  Tonight we are doing a show on the ideas of Walter Ong.  If you do not know who he is, listen because he is very cool!  The website of the show is:

Ken Daniszewski

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Hello everyone,

My name is Ken Daniszewski.  I work as an administrative staff member at UCSD in San Diego.  My background is mostly in accounting and education.  I am interested in understanding neuroethics as it might relate to research administration, and also I am interested in the Peer 2 Peer University model.   Also, I’ve read several articles lately about how popular neuroenhancing drugs are becoming, so I am interested in understanding how they might effect higher education in the future.  I look forward to learning about Neuroethics and participating in this course.

ξένία – die Fremde

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Hi everyone, I’m Xenia. I’ll just say a little bit about my ethnic and academic background. If you have any questions, feel free to ask ;-)

My mother is Croatian and my father is American of Haitian Creole- and Indo-Afro-American heritage. My stepfather, who raised me with my mom is a Muslim Bosnian, who fled to Germany during the war in the ’90. I live and grew up in Germany, where I currently study at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. I’m enrolled in two separate degree programs. Philosophy is my major in the ‘old program’ of which Magister is the associated degree. This used to be the common degree pursued by humanities students before the Bologna Process. The degree acquired hereby is equivalent to a master’s degree. My two minors in this course of study are Psychology and Zoology. I added Molecular Biology in form of a full-fledged bachelor program after my third semester. So in addition to philosophy as an advanced student (called Hauptstudium in German, which is equivalent to graduate studies)  I have to do the baby steps of undergraduate learning in a different field all over again :-)

Please don’t feel irritated if I put up to many smileys ;-) I love smiling and do so often when I talk to people. It’s difficult for me to communicate without body-language and facial expression usually involved in vis-à-vis conversation.

After applying, I wrote a post on how excited I am to participate in this course.

By the way, how about collecting the papers we read for this course on Mendeley? I wrote a review on this program on Blogcritics, mentioning the possibilities it could have for projects as the P2PU.
