hello
[6:58pm] <jfstephenson>
hi
[6:58pm] <rebekahn>
Hey everyone – I’m in a P2P meeting, so I’ll be in and out for the
next few minutes…
[7:01pm] <jfstephenson>
so, whats everyone been up to?
[7:02pm] <Laurian>
hi
[7:03pm] <Laurian>
up to… apart of drooling over the new 27″ iMac?
[7:04pm] <jfstephenson>
meh, im more of a linux person myself
[7:05pm] <Laurian>
well, OSX is a unix beauty, and with macports you can have pretty much
anything from Debian
[7:06pm] <jfstephenson>
yeah, i tried osx out on my laptop once but i couldnt get wireless to work
[7:06pm] <Laurian>
so, how is the writing task going? I managed just to write fragments
on paper, I still need to connect the story …
[7:06pm] <jfstephenson>
im only about a thousand pages in
[7:06pm] <jfstephenson>
words i mean
[7:07pm] <Laurian>
:)
[7:07pm] <Laurian>
I’m oscillating between focusing on the storyline and decorating the
environment.
[7:07pm] <jfstephenson>
sorry ive been reading a book thats almost a thousand pages long and i
got mixed up
[7:08pm] <Laurian>
fiction?
[7:08pm] <jfstephenson>
yep
[7:09pm] <jfstephenson>
so what are you writing about?
[7:09pm] <Laurian>
interesting (trying to recall if I encountered such massive fiction)
… the only 1000 pages book I have is a strange one: A New Kind of
Science by Stephen Wolfram
[7:10pm] <Laurian>
math, cell automata things
[7:10pm] <Laurian>
[which also influenced the story I'm writing]
[7:10pm] <jfstephenson>
well its only actually 900 pages. its Anathem by Neal Stephenson
[7:11pm] <rebekahn>
hey everyone -sorry about this – we’re in a P2PU meeting that’s dragging a bit
[7:11pm] <rebekahn>
but good news, the t-shirts are a go!
[7:11pm] <jfstephenson>
no problem
[7:11pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: have them all join in!
[7:13pm] <jfstephenson>
alexa, you still here?
[7:14pm] <alexa>
I’m back
[7:14pm] <alexa>
sorry, I had to take care of a friend
[7:14pm] <jfstephenson>
not too many people here today
[7:15pm] <rebekahn>
no, I think everyone is working on their creative masterpieces…
[7:16pm] <alexa>
I wonder how everyone is doing so far
[7:16pm] <jfstephenson>
well, ive been having fun researching mine, i just started actually writing it
[7:18pm] <Laurian>
brb
[7:19pm] <jfstephenson>
doesn’t look like nadeem will make it. he sent an email to the list
[7:20pm] <alexa>
hm, I’m not so enthusiastic about my research yet. I can’t help it, I
just like to draw the story before the whole plot is finished^^
[7:20pm] <jfstephenson>
so, what’s everyone writing about?
[7:22pm] <alexa>
no writing with me. I’m drawing my story
[7:22pm] <jfstephenson>
cool
[7:23pm] <jfstephenson>
that should be cool
[7:23pm] <alexa>
I hope so too.
[7:23pm] <jfstephenson>
im writing a story that is set out in the middle of nowhere instead of
some huge city.
[7:24pm]
alexa_ joined the chat room.
[7:24pm] <alexa_>
my computer lost it again
[7:24pm] <Laurian>
I’m writing about fashion shows
[7:24pm] <jfstephenson>
i saw
[7:24pm] <Laurian>
well, hacking fashion
[7:25pm] <jfstephenson>
thats neat
[7:25pm] <Laurian>
I wonder if it will make sense in the end
[7:25pm] <jfstephenson>
lol
[7:26pm] <alexa_>
I think you’re not the only one who thinks if their story makes sense
in the end.
[7:26pm] <Laurian>
on the other hand, I’m terrrified that I might write something that
somebody else did in the past and I was not aware of
[7:26pm]
alexa left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[7:27pm] <jfstephenson>
im sure it will be great
[7:29pm] <Laurian>
jfstephenson: you’re writing about?
[7:30pm] <alexa_>
something insane with mad scientists?
[7:31pm] <jfstephenson>
im writing a story set out in the country instead of the city about
weather control ET and power hungry security agencies
[7:31pm] <alexa_>
seriously, my story is set in the near future in new york
[7:33pm] <jfstephenson>
alexa_, thats interesting
[7:34pm] <alexa_>
sry, phone rings
[7:34pm] <jfstephenson>
its been for ever since i was in new york
[7:35pm] <alexa_>
okay, back. some of my relatives live in new york. I visit them sometimes.
[7:35pm] <alexa_>
well, I also thought I’d be a cool setting
[7:36pm] <jfstephenson>
i have an aunt and uncle who live there
[7:37pm] <jfstephenson>
Laurian, where are you setting your story?
[7:37pm] <Laurian>
hmmm, just realized that I have not set in what city my story is
[7:37pm] <Laurian>
I should do London, at least I know how it looks
[7:38pm] <jfstephenson>
write what you know
[7:39pm] <Laurian>
jfstephenson: yup, I won’t probably have a big emphasis on location
and outside environment, but on interiors, catwalk, etc
[7:39pm] <jfstephenson>
so not alot of outside movement
[7:40pm] <Laurian>
I really need to move from paper to the computer, as I discovered that
I could not read some pieces of my own handwriting
[7:40pm] <Laurian>
as I wrote things when I was falling asleep
[7:41pm] <rebekahn>
Hi everyone. Sorry about all of that. I’m abck now for good!
[7:41pm] <rebekahn>
The p2pu people are scattered all over the world, and this was the
only time we could meet.
[7:41pm] <jfstephenson>
i havent actually hand written anything longer than a grocery list
since i was in high school
[7:42pm] <jfstephenson>
rebekahn, no prob
[7:42pm] <Laurian>
jfstephenson: I had written just sterile research papers, it feels so
different now to write otherwise
[7:43pm] <rebekahn>
So I have a bit of feedback for you all from the meeting – don’t know
if you want to discuss it now or wait till the discussion is over?
[7:44pm] <jfstephenson>
the discussion had been pretty quiet so far
[7:44pm] <Laurian>
so
[7:44pm] <jfstephenson>
so why not now
[7:44pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: cheer us up
[7:44pm] <Laurian>
:)
[7:44pm] <rebekahn>
Cool. It will cheer you all up!
[7:44pm] <rebekahn>
1. They think you are all amazing. And they think the course is the
perfect model for P2PU
[7:45pm] <jfstephenson>
sweet
[7:45pm] <Laurian>
hehe
[7:45pm] <alexa_>
really?!
[7:45pm] <rebekahn>
2. They would like to join a chat (mayebe next week, possibly the week
after) to get feedback from you on tech. See, we’re spending some
money now on the development for the next semester, and they’d like
you guys to give advice on what would be the ideal
[7:46pm] <Laurian>
interesting
[7:46pm] <rebekahn>
alexa_: yup! They LOVE you guys
[7:46pm] <alexa_>
^^
[7:46pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: I agree. I think you all could give some very valuable input
[7:47pm] <rebekahn>
3. They want you all to stay involved (if you want to) in the next
semester of P2PU – as advisors or co-ordinators or whatever you want,
but they would really like you to stay involved, since you’ve all done
so well
[7:48pm] <jfstephenson>
awesome, im in
[7:48pm] <rebekahn>
jfstephenson: excellent. I’m glad
[7:48pm] <rebekahn>
4. You will all be getting limited edtion T-shirts, which I’ll be
posting from Berlin.
[7:49pm] <jfstephenson>
very cool
[7:49pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: I’m in, too.
[7:49pm] <rebekahn>
Yes. So that’s the good news. I’ll mail this all to the list as well,
so everyone will know.
[7:49pm] <jfstephenson>
ive told some of my friends about p2pu and they seem very interested
[7:50pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: excellent
[7:50pm] <Laurian>
btw, I have to add this course/univ. on my linkedin profile …
provided that I pass the next assignment :P
[7:51pm] <alexa_>
I’ve told my friends about p2pu as well, but unfortuntely they don’t
think that we’re doing anything serious here.
[7:51pm] <alexa_>
-.-
[7:51pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: Absolutely! You’re all the first graduating class of the
first semester of Peer 2 Peer University! It’s pretty special.
[7:52pm] <jfstephenson>
my friends are the type that like SF and spend dozens of hours online
[7:52pm] <Laurian>
alexa_: maybe p2pu would need a stronger online presence, to compete
with any univ.
[7:52pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: no offence the current site is a bit off
[7:52pm] <jfstephenson>
so its understandible they get it quicker than some
[7:53pm] <jfstephenson>
i dont really visit the main site that much
[7:53pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: the wiki you mean? Yes, it’s horrible
[7:53pm] <rebekahn>
I hate using it. And it’s ugly.
[7:53pm] <jfstephenson>
i mostly just use our blog
[7:54pm] <jfstephenson>
cant they use mediawiki>
[7:54pm] <rebekahn>
jfstephenson: me too. Oddly enough, it’s one of the things that only
our course is doing. Most of the rest use the horrible blog
[7:54pm] <jfstephenson>
wordpress rocks
[7:54pm] <rebekahn>
I’m not sure. I asked the same question about mediawiki, I don’t think
they answered me…
[7:55pm] <rebekahn>
But this is exactly the kind of feedback they’ll be looking for. So if
any of you want to write me a mail to pass on, or save it for when
they join us, it would be great.
[7:55pm] <jfstephenson>
or if they want something really simple they could use dokuwiki
[7:56pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: I would really do (now talking as I would be the boss :) )
the p2pu to look as a really online media things, web2.0 (I hate the
name), involving everyone in the courses
[7:56pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: So open it up even more, you mean?
[7:57pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: I would love to have (they’re expensive)
http://informationarchitects.jp/ design it
[7:57pm] <Laurian>
[looking for links]
[7:57pm] <rebekahn>
Well, we write a lot of grant proposals, you never know…
[7:58pm] <rebekahn>
Wow. Their stuff is lovely.
[7:58pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: starting from this idea
http://informationarchitects.jp/newspaper-wiki-schematics/
[7:59pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: more http://informationarchitects.jp/washington-post-redesign-as-a-wiki/
[8:00pm
] <rebekahn>
Hmmmm, that’s really interesting
[8:00pm] <Laurian>
in the idea of crossing the standard univ. push media to a collaborative one
[8:00pm] <rebekahn>
absolutely. It could take P2P to really interesting places…
[8:01pm]
alexa joined the chat room.
[8:01pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: and I might talk to Olivier from them to see if they would
like to be involved just for fun
[8:01pm]
xhttp left the chat room.
[8:01pm] <Laurian>
he has crazy but clear ideas
[8:01pm] <rebekahn>
Really? That would be amazing. Thank you.
[8:01pm]
xhttp joined the chat room.
[8:02pm]
alexa_ left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[8:03pm] <jfstephenson>
so, any other news?
[8:03pm] <rebekahn>
if you all could come up with some ideas for discussion and feedback
it would be great. We’d probably only be able to do it on the 4th of
November
[8:03pm] <Laurian>
…my background is in such web/online branding environment, I cannot
help not to have a (strong) opinion
[8:04pm] <rebekahn>
Laurian: Good! That’s what we need!
[8:05pm]
johndbritton left the chat room.
[8:05pm] <Laurian>
and Nadeem know everything about online learning things
[8:06pm] <rebekahn>
well who knows, we might just end up taking over the whole of P2PU.
[8:06pm] <rebekahn>
What’s the saying…. “The lunatics have overtaken the asylum…”
[8:06pm] <jfstephenson>
that was the plan all along. muhahaha
[8:07pm] <Laurian>
p2pu the cyberpunk university, the modern cyberpunk – the one set in
present :) [to re-use what we all concluded in the course]
[8:07pm] <rebekahn>
Exactly. It sounds perfect.
[8:07pm]
xhttp left the chat room.
[8:08pm]
xhttp joined the chat room.
[8:08pm] <rebekahn>
So, I know I missed most of the earlier conversation, but is everyone
okay/happy/getting along with next week’s assignment?
[8:08pm] <rebekahn>
I just wanted to check.
[8:08pm] <jfstephenson>
i should be fine.
[8:09pm] <rebekahn>
good.
[8:09pm] <rebekahn>
I’m really excited to see them all.
[8:10pm] <Laurian>
rebekahn: yup
[8:10pm] <rebekahn>
excellent.
[8:10pm]
alexa_ joined the chat room.
[8:10pm] <alexa_>
sorry, my firefox is crashing
[8:10pm] <rebekahn>
Glad all is on track.
[8:10pm] <rebekahn>
alexa_: mine crashed a couple of times today too. Weird.
[8:11pm]
alexa left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[8:11pm] <rebekahn>
Well, if everyone is happy, then I guess we can call it a day, unless
there’s anything else you’d like to discuss?
[8:12pm] <jfstephenson>
i should prolly get back to writing
[8:13pm] <Laurian>
well, I’m also in a skype chat, I’m split in too many things
[8:13pm] <jfstephenson>
see ya guys later
[8:14pm]
jfstephenson left the chat room. (“Leaving”)
[8:14pm] <Laurian>

[8:14pm] <rebekahn>
bye all!
[8:14pm]
