The Wire

This page aggregates posts from all participant blogs including comments. It’s a good place to keep track of the conversation. If you click on a title, you will be taken to the original post where you can comment. The first link is the link to a yahoo pipe (it’s a piece of online wizardry that is really only interesting for geeks). Unfortunately yahoo doesn’t let us remove it, so best to ignore. If you use an RSS reader, you can also grab the feed here: subscribe RSS.

Just wondering if the volunteer staff is reading each posting on blogs, etc. or if there’s a preferred place we need to post questions regarding infrastructure (when there’s no rush!) For example, I’m not sure that I’m receiving all comments via my RSS feed though I’m definitely getting what Jane sends out; also I’m still not sure about the page I have misplaced on my blog

    Hi Dineh:

Please post questions about the course structure or technology to nonfiction@p2pu.org (that’s the course organiser email). Let us know what is wrong with your misplaced page and we’ll try to help you find/move it.

The best place to follow the course related conversations is this page here (all blog posts and comments are aggregated). To read the full posts, you can just click on the titles.

By the way – if you register at gravatar.com and associate a picture with the email address that you used to register on this blog – it will automatically include your picture (like mine) in all comments you make here.

Well, Philipp, I seem to have been admonished in the past week for NOT posting my technical problems online because everything is supposed to be a matter of public record. Of course, just today we had the email from Jane saying something closer to my suggestion of yesterday that individual concerns can still be emailed directly to the staff. However, my saga of not being able to “link” pages from my blog has been sent to both Jane and Stian on email. I “created” a new page last week that I can still see somewhere on my own space, but it no longer even seems to show on my summary page and though it was “published” days ago and was supposed to be my bio I’ve never seen it on a feed. The essay that shows was my blog’s SECOND entry instead of the “About” page and that’s the one I’ve gotten comments on and know that others have seen. Based on the note from Jane today, then this type of concern needs to go to the mailing list from now on?? So, basically I’ve been sending the same or similar messages to as many emails and comments as I can but I promise this will be the last one (or have I already said that one before as well?!!) sorry about that…

  6. philipp Says:

No problem – send it to the list from now on and we’ll try to help.

A note about The Wire -> it only aggregates blog posts and comments to these posts. It does not aggregate pages, which explains why your page would not show up.

Hard as I tried, gravatar.com would not accept my name & password from WordPress! So, I had to get a new account, which I assume does not make that automatic connection to our site here. Is there a way to upload the “photo” via a different route? In any case, it’s not as though it’s my actual “photo” but just a graphic from one of my abstract watercolors… I have no particular compulsion to post my photo online but of course if it’s a requirement then I’ll do it but I recall Jane mentioning earlier that we could share “whatever” graphic we wanted. Still, the problem is that I couldn’t get that “direct connection” between the two systems & perhaps it’s because I’ve now had at least three different accounts (if not more) by starting with the first set of instructions sent to us last week prior to our blogs being set up (instructions said to set up a pbwiki blog and that in turn took me to a totally separate wordpress account set up). I can forward you my url from gravatar if that will help?

  8. dineh_ntantiso Says:

Aaah! I guess I finally connected to Gravatar! Now I’ll have to see if I can come up with a more interesting representation of myself. The red is overwhelming…

Apropos of our CC connections, I was a bit confused about the details of licensing until I started rummaging around another P2P course (on copyrights) and discovered all of their resources. I found a pdf file that “explained” all of the basics of CC licensing – but then I could not find the link to share with others in this spot. A search on Google provided the following Open Office version of the same document, fyi:
    [ODF]
ccLearn explains – OER and CC licenses 05 Apr 09
File Format: OpenDocument – View as HTML
Explanations. April 2009. Original image by lowjumpingfrog (Modified) …. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, and is ccLearn’s recommended …
    learn.creativecommons.org/…/cclearn-explanations-oer-and-cc-licenses-05-apr-09.odt –

Apart from that, I have now gotten proficient in changing my avatar (thanks Philipp!) – so what I am using now is THE photo from my window which is the one we were supposed to share for our first essay. Larger version is posted on the essay.

Hello Everyone, I just created my blog and posted a short bio but it may not yet be aggregated so I’ll introduce myself now. My name is Susan and I’m an academic librarian at SUNY Binghamton. I live in Ithaca which is about an hour away so I commute through rural countryside twice a day. I’ve been there about 5 years and before that I was a librarian at Cornell. Before becoming a librarian, I taught 10th grade English (a long time ago) in Mississippi, which is where I was born and lived until moving to Ithaca about 30 years ago. Looking forward to the course.
    Susan

  11. philipp Says:

Hi Susan: I added you to the aggregator. Should work now.

If any other blogs are missing from the aggregator, please post the URL of your blog here and I’ll add it.

  12. Susan Says:

Thanks Philipp! I have used wikis and blogs but not in the way P2P works so I’m a bit of a newbie! I just uploaded the first week’s assignment and tried uploading a photo of myself. When I looked at it, it ‘s a HUGE jpg andI’m not sure how to remove it and start over. Sorry!!!

  13. philipp Says:

Susan: No worries. Send a link to the page that has the HUGE photo. Usually you can resize the photo in the wordpress page editor. Try going into the editor and right-clicking the image and see if there is a menu that let’s you resize or if you can simply drag the corners of the image to be smaller.

I just posted a note to my blog but it’s not showing up on The Wire. I thought our posts were supposed to aggregate automatically on this page.

Also, can I make a suggestion? Why not add links to everyone’s blogs on the right column of this page? Maybe under Blogroll.

  15. philipp Says:

Aileen: I can see two posts on your blog (titled “Short bio” and “Cynthia’s question”). Both show up in The Wire. Some ideas what might have gone wrong:

    * The Wire might take a few minutes to collect a new post. If you write the post, then check immediately, it might not be there. Give it a little time!
    * Did you publish the post or is it still marked as a draft? Make sure it shows up when you go to your blog.
    * Is it a post (which should show up) or a page (which shouldn’t)?

I think it’s a good idea to link to everyone’s blogs in the blogroll. I’ll mention it to Jane.

  16. aileen_gelpi Says:

Phillip, thanks for answering so quickly! I guess they don’t call me impatient for nothing. I have two other technical observations. These are regarding browser compatibility. I notice that the bloggers’ names don’t show up on the top right-hand corner on IE but they do on Firefox. The name link seems like a very convenient way to navigate back to the individual blogs’ front pages.

Also, when clicking on the edit tab in the Assignments page, the html text does not show up in the window when using IE. It does show up with Firefox. Is this just happening to me and could it be related to my browsers’ versions?

Finally and FYI, I get a certificate error with Firefox when first reaching the Peer2PeerU home page and then again when navigating into the Open Creative web page.

  17. philipp Says:

Thanks for pointing out the blog name link issue in IE. Since none of us use IE we had missed it. It’s a stylesheet problem and I hope to get to it tomorrow.

The certificate error might be one of two things. Because the p2pu.org site uses a security certificate that was issued for pbworks.com, your browser might ask you to manually accept the certificate as trusted. You would only have to do this once and it should be resolved. If that does not solve the issue, it might be related to browser add-ons that you are using. Do you get the error in both IE and Firefox. Most people who saw the error message were using Firefox with CoolIris, and when they disabled CoolIris, the error went away.

My general recommendation would be to use Firefox (and not IE) because it is easier for us to troubleshoot any issue you might have and it is more up-to-date with recent web-technologies than IE.
